Music crafts for children
With these rhythm crafts for children you can have an orchestra
party and loads of fun!
1. Rhythm Sticks 2+ years
You will need:
- 1cm dowel stick
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Some sand paper
Saw the dowel stick in 20cm pieces. Round off the sawn edges with sandpaper. Decorate and individualise rhythm sticks with paint and permanent markers. Remember to wear an apron or old T-shirt.
You can also attach your rhythm sticks to the jungle gym.
2. Chimes 2+ years
You will need:
- A piece of wooden dowel stick 20cm
- Some string
- Different size nails
- Paint and permanent markers
Tie the string to the heads of the nails and then to the dowel stick. Hit the nails with an old spoon.

3. Paper plate shaker 3+ years
You will need:
- 2 paper plates
- Lentils or seeds
- Glue
- Stapler
- Ribbons
Decorate the bottom side of the two paper plates. Staple the decorated paper plates up to the halfway mark then put the seeds or lentils in. Staple the left over halves together so that the seeds or lentils are sealed inside. Decorate with some ribbon to the sides with a stapler.

4. Rattles or shakers 3+ years
You will need;
- Small container with a lid
- Seeds, dry peas
- Sticky tape
- Stickers to decorate
Fill the small container with seeds and/or dry peas. Place lid on container and tape closed. Girls can dance to music holding their rattle. Shakers can be made with big containers with comfortable handles. Boys will love keeping the beat with their big shaker.
**Search for natural shakers for example giant pod with loose seed in.
5. Sand paper blocks: Adult supervision is required for the construction of these crafts for children.
You will need:
- 2 equal sized wooden blocks
- Sandpaper
- Drawing pins or staple gun (do not leave children alone with a staple gun)
- Scissors
Cut sandpaper to cover and fit the wooden blocks. Fasten the 2 pieces of sandpaper to the wooden blocks with the drawing pin or staples. Rub the blocks against each other to make a sh- sound.
**Have an Orchestra party! Make different instruments and sing “Happy Birthday” in style.
