Crafts for children box table from an old tomato box

A crafts for children box table makes use of and recycles old tomato boxes.
Many vegetable and fruit varieties bought by consumers come packed in boxes. Some of these are cardboard, others are stronger and have masonite (softboard) panels reinforced at the corners. These boxes are ideal to use as tables for small toddlers and children. With some creative ideas and touches, the boxes can be made colourful and attractive. They are a great way of recycling and reusing materials.
You will need:
- One or more empty (tomato) vegetable or fruit boxes;
- Acrylic paints of various colours;
- Pictures from serviettes or wrapping paper;
- Modge podge.
- Clear varnish
Method:
For this to work successfully the box will be turned upside down so that the flat closed section will now be at the top and the box open underneath. Make sure the box is clean and remove any stickers from the ends and sides.
Paint a white base coat on all sides. Also do the bottom edges to give a neat finish. The second coat of paint can be colour or designs such as stripes, checks, etc. The next step is to take a picture or drawing from the paper serviette or wrapping paper and modge podge these onto the box. Decide where you want these: On the sides of the box or on the large flat section, or both. Once the modge podge is completed an has dried, seal and waterproof the whole box with clear varnish.
Young boys or girls can use this as a toy table. Our daughter loves to use hers for play-play tea parties for her and her dolls. Children love to call these decorated boxes their very own and will think up all sorts of uses for them. They can of course be used the right way up as storage boxes.
