Children's toys from 7 to 8 years.

The age of discovery; self as well as world discovery. The children's toys are becoming more sophisticated and by now, more focused.

Balls, bats, goals, skipping rope, hula hoop, hop balls: This is the age to introduce semi-formal and formal sports activities. Do not pressurise too much as you want the interest to build not wane or worse, die through pressure: Sport should be fun.

Interlocking blocks:

Sticker and activity books, paint by numbers:

Thinking, detective and treasure hunt games:

Cds, cassettes, limited videos:

Puzzles above 90 pieces:

Early reading and story books: Despite the rise of online internet activities, nothing beats holding paper in your hand and if the content is of high quality, take the time to invest in good books. We still have some from my own childhood in the 1960s! I have recently finished reading Sterling North's 'Rascal the raccoon' to my children; they loved it.

Collectables and pocket money items:

Train sets and toys: Almost the time to shift between toys and more serious hobbies.

Art and craft packs, beads:

Bug viewers, magnifiers, telescope, basic science kits: Part of the joy of learning and discerning specific interests.

Bicycle: Who doesn’t remember the sense of achievement when you first learned to ride your first bicycle, gears or not? And the sense of power and adventure that went along with that?

Advanced construction sets: Should now have a sense of satisfaction at being able to build something more permanent than an interlocking plastic block set. Great for problem solving, initiative and concentration.

Sewing kits: Learning to make gifts like purses, bags or dolly clothes.

Wooden kits: Once finished these can be painted for a more personal and permanent record.

Paper art: There are books and websites on paper planes, paper dolls and origami.

Prams, dolls: Dressing up dollies is good for fine hand co-ordinations.

Scrapbooking: Great fun to keep track of what has been achieved and make a visually striking record. Aids with design and organising skills too.

Spiritual development: Leadership potential and skills will now be beginning to show. Nurture and develop these precious qualities. Although older children, toys that were earlier favourites may remain so.
