Children's toys from 12 to 18 months
1 year to 18 months:
Children follow our example, good or bad. Thus you cannot expect your child to do what you are not doing yourself. The bottom line is if you set rules, make sure you stick to them yourself. Do some research to figure out a plan for yourself. Hang a toy from the high chair; the child will enjoy pulling it up and letting it down.
Block trolley: A better option to stimulate and assist walking than a walking ring. It doubles as a packing, pushing and unpacking exercise at the same time. Encourage the child to pack and push toys from one place to another as a game. Teach them to unpack and pack back in the same way.
Stacking rings:
Shape sorter: As children's toys go, these are always a hit. Store the shapes inside the set to avoid losing pieces. Name the shape the child is looking for to help with remembering shape names later.
Cds/cassettes/limited videos: Keep the videos to one hour or so at a time, and not more than twice a day if possible: The effects of that flickering screen affect the brainwave pattern, as well as the eyesight. More of a concern is the radiation (emfs) that spread off the screen. The teaching ability of videos is important, though. Choose ones you also enjoy as repetition is important. Where they have singing, choose ones with good singing voices to help tune the child’s ear.
Musical instruments: The next step after listening to music; learning the practical steps to making music. Toy instruments are fine as long as they do not have thin synthetic sounds. Bells, rattles and drums made from things in the kitchen are a good idea.
Blocks:
Sandpit, sand, sand toys: Despite that they have to wash or bath and change clothes after each session, the importance of textures and physically feeling something natural cannot be overemphasised.
Puppets and theatre: Good idea for a party.
Cardboard/bath books:
Baby dolls: Medium sized soft dolls or teddies to cuddle.
Soft vehicles:
Bath toys: Toys that pour and squirt, shapes that stick to tiles.
Big interlocking building blocks:
Activity table: Wonderful tool as there are various activities should one prove boring in the short term. Interesting to observe their first interests and favourites.
Bible stories: Essential, and too early is far better than too late in this case. There are many more significant and wonderful stories than just David and Goliath, or Daniel in the lion’s den. Early spiritual roots are vital and lifelong.
