Charcoal grill tips can include these sweet treats

Include these charcoal grill tips when enjoying a barbecue with family or friends and enjoy some mouthwatering tastes:

Children love roasting marshmallows on kebab or skewer sticks. This is one delicacy that takes some practise. Too much flame will cause the marshmallow to light up like a fire rocket. Once you’ve tamed the flames and saved what you can from your ‘tar baby’, there will not be much left. Coals too cool might heat the mallow which looks the same on the outside as when you put it on the stick but is in reality soft inside. Before you know it, they may ‘plop and sizzle’ in the fire.

I have done both these before finding the middleground that delivers a lightly roasted beauty. Dip the ready roasted marshmallows in a melted chocolate sauce for an even more delicious treat.

Healthy fruity grill options: Pineapples. Grill large fresh pineapple chunks over the coals in much the same way as the marshmallows. Marinate pineapple pieces in lemon juice, brown sugar or honey, and cinnamon. A variation in these charcoal grill tips is to cook in aluminium foil pockets with a bit of butter. Pineapples are versatile and can be served as a sweet or with grilled meats. Fresh pineapple can help the body digest meat more easily. Pineapple liquidized with mint leaves makes a refreshing smoothie. (Add fine almond or nut powder for an easy and healthy start to a camping day.)

Bananas. Bananas can also be grilled. Keep them in their skins, and cut a slit through the skin about three quarters of the length. You can fill the slit with a mixture of butter, cinnamon, honey or chocolate. Place on coals whilst the main course is being enjoyed, so the bananas will be ready for dessert.

Apples. Core apples and fill them with very thick sweet vanilla custard. Wrap them in double layers of aluminium foil and place them on the side of the hot coals to bake. You can also use thick cream, raisins, cinnamon, cranberries, fine nuts, pieces of buttered bread soaked in evaporated milk, lemon juice and raisins, fine coconut and jam to make great apple fillings for baking in the coals. Sweeten your baked apple with honey or brown sugar.

Nightcap:If you have a heat proof and fire safe kettle, brew some tea or coffee over the coals. Serve along with whipped cream and the marshmallows to round off a great barbecue. Use these charcoal grill tips for sweet things and enjoy the taste and the experience!
